September: Spider Season Speed Dating

With August coming to a close, many Texans throw in their beach towels and sunscreen, ready to welcome in the autumn season with bonfires and smores. Even though the heat is far from over, there’s something about the start of football season and the fall semester that makes it seem colder. It’s no strange sight to see someone trudging around September’s sweltering heat in a hoodie or fur-lined boots, tricking themselves into thinking the weather is cooling down.

Undoubtedly, September is a strange month for Central Texans. But whether you’re still tubing the river or drinking pumpkin spiced lattes, there’s one certain thing, it’s spider season!

No matter where you live, you may notice more spiders around your house during September. Most of the spiders that find their way into Texans’ homes are harmless and actually eat more annoying pests like mosquitoes and roaches. However, there are some venomous species of spiders in Texas to watch out for like the brown recluse (pictured to the left) and the black widow. If you notice either of these spiders in or around your home, contact us today.

It’s not uncommon to think the increase of sightings must mean that September is spider mating season, but that is far from the truth.

So when is spider mating season anyways?

I regret to inform all of you arachnophobes, but spider mating season is year-round. That’s right, spiders can lay eggs any month of the year. Spiders are just like us and want to find somewhere warm to stay for the winter. Female spiders go in search of somewhere warm to lay their eggs for the upcoming winter and that means males follow in their footsteps, in search of a mate. You can think of September as the opening month for spider speed dating and the party is hosted at your house! If you don’t feel like playing host for these eight-legged lovers, it’s best to use pest control services for spiders before the party gets into full gear during the later part of the month.

How to keep spiders out of the house.

If you want to exterminate spiders in your house, make sure to spray along baseboards, windows, doors, and any areas of storage in your house. Some great ways to get spiders out of your house are cleaning cobwebs, sealing exposed cracks to the outside of your house, and spraying a mixture of water and essential oils around your house. Peppermint oil is purported to be very effective for removing spiders from the inside of a house. However, spiders are masters of hiding and many species can be difficult to control, so contact a professional pest control service for the best results.

So even though the temperature may still be in the high 90’s well into September, remember that spiders are a lot like the residents of New Braunfels, Texas, and are gearing up for the weather to cool down. Contact the Bug-A-Meister for the best pest control services in New Braunfels, Texas, and protect your home from spiders’ season of speed dating!
